Writer's Agony

Writer’s Agony
A letter from my friend, the writer
Dearest friend
I’ve been reading your letters again
Poems and words
Thought by you and written by your hand
Dearest friend
I know my answer is late and I know
That our correspondence
Needs both you and me to flow
But my writing has been tired
And my thoughts are way too wild
And I lost my pens and paper
In the rain
Dearest friend
So instead of writing useless words, I send
You a melody
A little tune I wrote two days ago
About a writer’s agony
But my writing has been tired
And my thoughts are way too wild
And I lost my pens and paper
In the rain

You Should Come Sailing

You Should Come Sailing
A letter from my friend, the sailor
You should come sailing
I’ll pick you up one day
Sooner or later
You should come sailing
I’ll pick you up one day
Sooner or later
I’ll pick you up one day
Maybe just a few years before we die
Two very old ladies, hands warm and dry
Faces made out of wood
And eyes filled with water and light
You should come sailing
I’ll pick you up one day
Sooner or later
I’ll pick you up one day
Sooner or later

Song for Tom

Song for Tom
A letter to my friend, the singer
He took the lines of all the unfinished love songs
And turned them into a manifest of tears
And of the undeveloped photographs he made an
Exhibition only the angels could see
And he collected the leaves of the trees in the autumn and he
Kept them to remind him of spring
And when he learned that the stars that he loved to look at were dead
He began to sing
He finished everything that laid there unfinished
All that had ended before it had begun
He finished everything that laid there unfinished
All that had ended before it had begun

Fig Tree & Friends

Fig Tree & Friends
A letter from my friend, the poet
Cutting plums
Under the fig tree
Today mama turns
Sixty
And I’m cutting figs
For the party
That fig tree is a part of me
Because it’s what I am used to see
Now it’s midnight and
My window is open
And I hear my mother laugh
With her best friends
They are drinking wine under the fig tree
And I think to myself
That the best friends always stay
Until the bitter end

Sisters
A letter to my sister
She came to me and told me
That she couldn’t fly, she couldn’t fly
I told her “well, you don’t have to”
She started to cry, started to cry
I went to her and told her
“I don’t wanna die, I don’t wanna die”
She told me “well, you don’t have to”
I started to cry, started to cry
Sometimes it’s better to say the things as they are
I try
She went to town and started
a big, big fight, a big, big fight
I went to town and saw that
It made her high, it made her high
She came back home and told me
That she did right, she did right
I told her “oh, my dear sister
You are living in denial, living in denial”
Sometimes it’s better not to play games
I try
We made our dinner and had
Nothing to say, had nothing to say
I was afraid that she would
Walk away, would walk away
She told me that she really
Wanted to fly, she wanted to fly
I told her “oh, my dear sister
I really want you to try, I want you to try”
And when I let her go, she let me go
By and by

Here We Are

Here We Are
A letter to my siblings
Here I am
With my sister
Here we stand
With our brother
Killing time
On our parents’ porch
Playing cards
On our parents’ porch
Here we stand
A crew from the past
And I wonder how long
it’ll last
It might last forever
As long as we gather
Take our time together
On our parents’ porch
